THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE AND COULD LEAD TO SERIOUS INJURY. FURTHERMORE, OTHER DRIVERS HAVE REPORTED SCARY INCIDENTS WHEN THEY WERE DRIVING ON AN EXPRESSWAY AND SUDDENLY LOST ENGINE POWER. ALTHOUGH MY VEHICLE WAS FIXED, IT IS A TEMPORARY SOLUTION AT BEST. A BRIEF INTERNET SEARCH CONFIRMS THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THE MALIBU THAT GM HAS YET TO APPROPRIATELY FIX. ACCORDING TO THIS DEALERSHIP AND THE DEALERSHIP THAT ULTIMATELY FIXED THE CAR, THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE CHEVY MALIBU THAT NEEDS TO BE RECALLED. THIS ALLOWED THE VEHICLE TO REGAIN ENGINE POWER BUT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT REMAINED ON. I WAS TOLD TO CUT THE ENGINE AND OPEN/CLOSE THE DRIVER’S SIDE DOOR BEFORE RESTARTING THE VEHICLE. I WAS BARELY ABLE TO EXIT THE HIGHWAY WITHOUT INCIDENT AND TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A CHEVY DEALERSHIP. I WAS DRIVING ON AN EXPRESSWAY WHEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE: “REDUCED ENGINE POWER.” THE ENGINE POWER WAS CUT TO APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH WHICH WAS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS ON AN EXPRESSWAY AND I DID NOT KNOW WHAT WAS HAPPENING. BOTH TIMES I HAD BEEN ON THE HIGHWAY FOR ABOUT 15-20 MILES AND COMPLETED THE TRIPS. I HAVE READ MANY COMPLAINTS ONLINE WITH THIS SAME EXACT ISSUE, AND IT NEVER SEEMS TO BE RESOLVED. I ASSUMED IT WAS JUST A COMPUTER GLITCH OR ISSUE, UNTIL NOW AT ABOUT 35K MILES, ON THE SAME TRIP, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON WITH THE SAME “ENGINE POWER REDUCED” WARNING CAME ON. I ARRIVED AND TURNED THE CAR OFF, FULLY EXPECTING ISSUES THE NEXT DAY WHEN I LEFT, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS OFF. I WAS ON A 90 MILE TRIP AND CONTINUED ON, AS I HAD NOTHING I COULD DO THEN AND THERE. THE WARNING ON MY DASH SAID “ENGINE POWER REDUCED”. I HAD A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COME ON AT ABOUT 25K MILES WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. I PURCHASED A 2017 CHEVROLET MALIBU ABOUT A YEAR AGO. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND OFFERED THE CONTACT FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TOWARDS THE COST OF A NEW ENGINE. THE CONTACT WAS GIVEN AN ESTIMATE FOR THE REPAIR COST. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE ENTIRE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT DROVE TO ART MOEHN CHEVROLET WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THERE WAS A DEFECTIVE CAMSHAFT THAT BURST AND SPREAD METAL FRAGMENTS THROUGHOUT THE ENGINE. ALSO, THE CHECK ENGINE INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH, THE CONTACT HEARD A NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO STALL. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 CHEVROLET MALIBU. This shouldn’t occur in any new vehicle, especially one that “totally measures up.” Here are some actual complaints logged with the NHTSA about the 2017 Chevy Malibu Engine Problems: It turns out that the cause is a damaged piston that must be replaced. It might also have a misfire and low compression in the cylinders. The problem exhibits itself as a rough running engine with a DTC P0300. The engine has multiple issues, but one of the primary communications to look at is Service Bulletin #19-NA-122. Unreliable vehicle with on-going issues and lack of support from dealership and GM.” Dealership cannot address since the issue is intermittent and I cannot replicate on command. Still makes an intermittent rumbling noise and clunks at time when decelerating. In the shop 11 times in the past 12 months. All items replaced at less than 35,000 miles. I have had o2 sensors replaced twice, wire harness replaced, accelerator pedal replaced, pre-catalytic converter errors, mis-fire errors, catalytic converter replaced, rear wheel bearings. My car has lost speed and would not accelerate over 2nd gear on 2 different occasions. Check engine light came on a month and half later. “I purchased a 2017 Malibu new with 5 miles 12/2016. One Edmunds reviewer states the trouble with this component. No matter how potent the motor appears, if it doesn’t work right, the ride is anything but pleasant. Midsize cars are larger than the compact counterpart and require a more powerful, functional engine.
